Cruise operator Carnival to pay $20 million in pollution and cover-up case

In 2016, Princess Cruise Lines agreed to pay a $40 million penalty for illegally dumping oil contaminated waste into the sea and trying to cover it up. It was the largest criminal penalty ever imposed for intentional vessel pollution, and the U.S. Justice Department put the cruise line’s parent company, Carnival Corporation, on notice. But that did not stop the company from polluting again, according to federal prosecutors.

Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest luxury cruise operator, emitted nearly 10 times more sulphur oxide (SOX) around European coasts than did all 260 million European cars in 2017, a new analysis by sustainable transport group Transport & Environment (T&E) reveals.
