A number of reception facilities offer a vapour recovery service, using different techniques. MTD, located in the port of Antwerp, operates a vapour recovery unit in which the vapours are absorbed on active carbon. Installations such as ESSO and Total are burning the gasoline vapours of barges together with other gases produced in their installations.

A far reaching solution, however, is the on-board installation of a container filled with active carbon. This carbon will absorb vapours that are created by the dashing of the cargo, or after the unloading of the cargo. In this way, the barge is completely flexible to carry out the removal of the vapours while steaming up to its next loading point.
